Report: Tourists had $3.7 billion impact on Scottsdale economy in 2007

An estimated 8.4 million out-of-towners showed up in Scottsdale for at least a day during 2007, and they had a $3.7 billion impact on the city's economy. That's according to the city's just-released annual report on its tourism industry.

The report depicts a thriving tourism trade that fuels Scottsdale's businesses, filling up hotels, shops, golf courses, restaurants and tax coffers.

 "The visitor industry provides an estimated $36.7 million - about 20 percent - of total (sales) tax collections," according to the report.

But that was last year. The 2008 report may not look so rosy. "It's history," said Tom Silverman, general manager of the Chaparral Suites Resort. "You are only as good as the year you are in.
