Blue recycling containers, recognized in many indoor places such as offices and home laundry rooms, are also showing up outdoors in downtown Scottsdale.

Visitors strolling the sidewalks can recycle plastic bottles and cans in new blue containers placed throughout downtown.

The city's Downtown Group is giving passers-by the chance to help keep the city "green" by using 10 recently installed containers.

Ruth Johnson of the Scottsdale Downtown Group said the idea originated from suggestions from both residents and visitors.

The blue barrels can be found in public parking facilities, public rest rooms and, more specifically, Stetson Plaza at SouthBridge, the Canal Bank and some of the popular Scottsdale trolley stops.

Johnson said that as the effort expands, the Downtown Group is considering installing more recycling containers, depending on public acceptance.

Rachel Pearson, corporate communications director for the Scottsdale Convention and Visitors Bureau, said she believes the installation of these recycling bins will enhance Scottsdale's "green" image.

"It reinforces the city of Scottsdale's commitment to the green process and will help residents and visitors participate in these activities," Pearson said.
